Design Considerations
- Foundation: sole boards/base plates spreading load to acceptable ground bearing pressure
- Bracing: diagonal bracing for longitudinal and transverse stability
- Tie-in to structure: ties at specified vertical/horizontal spacing to resist wind and stability loads
- Wind loading: sheeted or shrink-wrapped scaffolds attract significantly higher wind loads: bracing and ties must be re-checked

Common Failure Modes
- Inadequate bracing leading to progressive collapse

Practical Notes
- Sheeting or shrink-wrapping a scaffold dramatically increases wind load: this is one of the most common causes of scaffold collapse and must be reflected in the design, not assumed to be covered by standard bracing.
- Never allow scaffold alteration by unlicensed personnel: even removing a single brace can compromise overall stability.
- Duty rating must match actual site use, not intended use: material storage on a light-duty scaffold is a frequent and serious overload scenario.
