Proof Rolling Test and Proof Roll Assessment
Proof rolling, also called test rolling, is a controlled trafficking assessment used to identify areas of visible instability, yielding, rutting or excessive deformation in earthworks and subgrade.

A nominated roller or loaded vehicle travels over the test surface while an authorised observer records the response.
Engineering review status: Project specifications and authority test methods control the equipment, loading, coverage, moisture condition, observation criteria and corrective action.
What proof rolling demonstrates
Proof rolling provides an immediate, practical indication of surface and near-surface stability under the nominated test load. It can help locate isolated weak, wet, poorly compacted or variable areas that may not be identified by discrete density tests.
It does not directly measure:
- Relative compaction
- Bearing capacity
- CBR
- Elastic modulus
- Long-term settlement
- Performance under every future construction or traffic load
Austroads notes that proof rolling is an assessment of immediate stability rather than a measurement of degree of compaction. Density, moisture and other compliance testing may still be required.
Define the test before starting
The inspection record should identify:

The specified plant and procedure should be agreed before the lot is presented. Substituting equipment can materially change the stress applied to the surface.
Pre-test checks
Before proof rolling:
- Confirm that the test area and lot boundaries are clear.
- Confirm that required compaction, moisture, level and surface-preparation checks are complete.
- Inspect for standing water, soft edges, unsafe slopes, buried services and access constraints.
- Verify the plant configuration and test loading.
- Establish the driving pattern so the required area is covered safely.
- Define the witness point, stop-work signals and observation responsibilities.
The surface condition at the time of testing matters. Rainfall or moisture ingress after proof rolling may justify reassessment before the next layer is placed.
What the observer records
The observer should look for and locate:
- Visible vertical or lateral deformation
- Rutting or wheel indentation
- Pumping, weaving or shoving
- Cracking, heaving or surface distress
- Localised wet or soft zones
- Movement near transitions, trenches, structures and edges
- Material pickup or breakdown that affects interpretation
Observations should be mapped to chainage, offset, grid, coordinates or marked-up drawings. Terms such as minor or severe should only be used when the project defines them.
Assessment outcome
A transparent outcome record may use statuses such as:
- No visible instability observed under the nominated test conditions
- Localised response identified for further assessment
- Test stopped because conditions or equipment did not meet the test plan
- Corrective action completed and area presented for retest
Avoid stating that the ground has a particular bearing capacity unless a separate, appropriate test and interpretation support that conclusion.
Corrective action and retesting
Potential responses may include drying, moisture conditioning, recompaction, undercut and replacement, stabilisation, drainage improvement or further investigation. The appropriate action depends on the material, depth and cause of the observed response.
The record should link each affected zone to:
- Engineer or superintendent direction
- Corrective action
- Additional testing
- Retest date and result
- Release or hold-point status
